At Connie Maxwell Children’s Home and Baptist Church we have a proud heritage of caring for the complete needs of children and youth. That care takes the form of encouraging each student in residence to develop in their intellectual pursuits, their work ethic, their moral ethic, their relationship with peers and adults, and their physical well-being. We also believe that to care for the wellness of a student means we must encourage them in the spiritual realm. We provide regular Bible Study, worship experiences, and Christian service opportunities through our church located on the Greenwood campus. We also explain to students how one makes a decision to become a Christian. Never do we force or manipulate a student to make a decision to become a Christian. And, we are sensitive to the developmental capabilities of our students and seek not to encourage them to make this decision until they reach the age and stage that they can fully comprehend the responsibilities of their decision.
Perhaps you are also searching in your life for spiritual purpose and meaning. In the following paragraphs we will look at three Scripture verses that explain the Christian message.
In understanding the Christian message and how one “becomes a Christian” it is best to learn from what Jesus Christ spoke on the matter. In John 3:16 Jesus says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” We learn from this verse that God’s foremost attitude towards humanity is love. God’s love is so dynamic that God chose to become flesh, live among humanity in the person of Jesus of Nazareth, and offer his life through an execution on a cross to liberate us from the captivity of sin death, and lasting separation from God. In this saying Jesus teaches that our avenue to eternal life is found in believing in Jesus’ sacrifice on our behalf and trusting in God for our salvation. This belief is not just an intellectual acknowledgment that Jesus died on the cross for us, but it is the kind of belief that leads an individual to commit his or her life to active service and obedience.
The Christian concept of eternal life is focused not so much on length of life, but on an enriched quality of life that begins in this present life. In John 17:3 Jesus provides further insight regarding eternal life when he prays to God the Father, “Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” Here Jesus expresses the true essence of Christianity, the heart of the matter. Eternal life is a wonderful way of living life because it is based on a personal knowledge, a personal relationship between the believer and God. Rules and rituals are a part of the Christian life to be sure, but they are not the heart of the Christian life. Developing an intimate relationship with God through prayer, Bible Study, worship, and devoted service is what Jesus Christ has made possible for the believer.
There is one more Scripture to look at, and this one addresses the very practical matter of how one actually “becomes a Christian.” In Revelation 3:20 Jesus speaks in a vision to John the Disciple and states, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.” What a beautiful, though practical, description of how one becomes a Christian. Jesus Christ does the calling, the knocking on our life’s door, seeking the personal fellowship we have discussed. Each believer by their own choice can decide to respond to Christ’s call and through simple and sincere words invite Him into their inner being. Jesus then keeps His promise and enters the believer’s life for an eternal relationship.
To invite Christ into your life does not require a “magic” prayer or a “magic” place. Rather, God is looking for a deeply heartfelt prayer in whatever surroundings are appropriate and meaningful. You can pray with other individuals or in solitude. It is valuable to keep a record, possibly written in a Bible, of the occasion when you become a Christian. This is one decision you always want to remember in order to give you assurance and confidence in pursuing your personal relationship with God.
